Thushara Madushan excels for Gurukula

Third year player, right hand lower order batsman left arm leg spinner and all rounder Wanasinghe Arachchige Thushara Madushan has brought honour and fame to his Alma Mater Gurukula Vidyalaya Kelaniya one of the leading cricket playing schools in Gampaha District. Thushara was born on 27th April 2002 and he was admitted to the Grade one of his neighbourning school Sobitha Vidyalaya Sapugaskanda in 2008. He did not participate in any sports activities whilst he was in this school and his parents Daminda Deepal and Asoka Pathirana noticing his keenness for cricket he was admitted to the Cricket Academy Ragama when he was in Grade Four and he came under Sanjeewa Mendis for seven years. During this period he represented the Academy in the under 13 and 15 cricket tournaments conducted by the Mercantile Cricket Association and he was the Vice Captain of the under 15 team in 2017.

Then in 2014 he was admitted to Basilica College Ragama and in the same year representing the under 13 team he bagged 32 wickets with one ten wicket haul and two five wicket hauls and in the following year he claimed 35 scalps with three five wicket hauls and his coach was Lahiru Thiwanka and Prefect of Games and Master in Charge of cricket was Mr. Manjula.

Then he joined St. Anthonys College Wattala in 2016 and his coach was Sirantha Niroshana and the Master in Charge was Rev. Fr. Sajith. In his irst year he claimed 25 wickets with two five wicket hauls and played for the Prima Cup for Gampaha District and in his second year he bagged ten wickets with one five wicket haul and that year he could not gain a place in the Prima Cup Tournament. In 2018 he shifted to Gurukula Vidyalaya Kelaniya and came under Rasitha Dinesh and playing for the under 17 team in 2019 he captured 12 wickets with one five wicket haul and with these performances under his belt he gained a place in the first eleven team and in that season playing in 14 matches he captured 50 wickets with one ten wicket haul against Joseph Vaz College with 11 for 60 (3 for 33 and 8 for 27) and another five wicket haul. He played in the Big Match and the Limited Over Match against their arch rivals Dharmaloka Vidyalaya Kelaniya.

This year playing in the under 19 inter schools Limited Over Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association in five outings he claimed 12 wickets with one five wicket haul versus D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya Colombo and at the end of the first round he was the highest wicket taker of the Division One and after the conclusion of the tournament he was the fifth highest wicket taker of the tournament.

Their assistant coach Mr. Buddhika and the Principal Anil Geethalal was supportive of him throughout his career.
