KDCA to help umpires and scorers

The Kandy District Cricket Association has decided to provide a helping hand to young cricketers, who are interested in umpiring and scoring. It is a good break for the cricketers who have played the game and keen to continue their involvement in the game. They are being invited, for the seminars to be held under the guidance of internationally reputed umpires and scores. The Interested guys are requested to register themselves at Kandy District Cricket Association office at the earliest. Already 35 participants have confirmed their participation.

It is going to be a great break for new recruits since their two club tournaments arranged for shorter version and longer version competitions are on the way. If they do well, they will get the break to officiate in all domestic matches. In the early days Kandy produced some top class umpires of the calibre of Arthur Alwis, M.E.Marikar, T.M.A.Cooray, A. Balasooriya,Dunuwille brothers Sisil, Mervyn, Dikie,Malcolm Perera ,David Karunaratne,Terance de Silva, B..J.De Selfa,Harold Ranasinghe, P.H.H.S.Ariyapala, Ananda Eriyagama . This course for umpires and scores is designed to give further knowledge and sufficient skills to become a scorer and umpire.

Big matches put off

The much awaited big matches are in the dark, out of four big matches over here in Kandy, only one was played that was the “Battle of the Golds” between Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College and Sri Rahula College which ended in a draw. Then the other three games “Battle of Blues”, Trinity College vs. St. Anthony’s College, “Battle of the Babes” Vidyartha College vs St. Sylvester’s College, Battle of the Maroons” Kingswood College vs Dharmaraja College all these big matches have been halted due to the present corona situation. All the school officials and the old boys were ready to give a big hand, Most of these schools are hoping to play even later in the year to keep up the tradition.

P.W. Perera trophy match postponed

The traditional Ananda College vs Dharmaraja College cricket match which was to be played on May 3 and 4 did not take place due to COVID-19. This match is played for P. W Perera Memorial Trophy. This trophy was introduced in 1999 by the Cricket wing of Ananda Old Boys.

He did a great job in coaching both Dharmaraja and Ananda .He started his coaching career at Dharmaraja College, Kandy building the team up to beat teams like Ananda, Nalanda, Trinity and St.Anthony's. He then joined the Prisons Department in mid 1940’s and thereafter, coached schools wherever his job took him - St. Mary's College Negombo, Ananda, College, St. Servatius 'College St. Anthony's College, D. S.Senanayake College, He was at Ananda College as a student from 1935-1941 where he played cricket and captained in1940, and 1941 and also captained Combined Schools team

KDCA qualifying club cricket tournament halted

The Kandy District Cricket Association domestic limited over qualifying tournament was to start from 6th with16 teams in action. All participating clubs were geared for the tournament to show their talent, but had to be postponed due to the present coronavirus. The teams which were to play were Honest Star S.C.,Kingswood C.C., Titans S.C.., Tuskers C.C., Sport Plus S.C., Thunder C.C., Lion Heart C.C., New Wave C.C., Hewaheta C.C., Upcountry SM S.C., Central Youth C.C., Old Jinaraja C.C., Akurana C.C., Assex C.C., Siyanco S.C and Old Ranabima C.C.

A Chess tourney in Kandy

The new president of the Kandy YMCA Ishan Wiratunga a top chess promoter, has planned for a chess tournament, and with the support of the committee is hoping to start the tournament once the coronavirus waves off. He gave a big hand for Kandy chess promotion and his main aim is to keep the chess game on top in Kandy.

No rugby matches in Kandy

Sad to say coronavirus has disrupted rugby matches with the much awaited inter school competition being held up , Kandy schools Trinity, Kingswood, Vidyartha, Dharmaraja, St. Sylvester’s,St. Anthony’s , Wariyapola Sri Sumangala, Sri Rahula , these schools give a big hand for the game of rugby are affected. Some of the top schoolboy’ players are in the dark as; they can’t come out to give of their best

KDHA Hockey postponed

The Kandy District Hockey Association inter club hockey tournaments for both men and women have been postponed till the second half of the year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The men’s edition was to be held this month, while the women's event was to be organized next month. Originally, both the tournaments were scheduled to be held with a good organizing part but were postponed because of the deadly virus. The postponement of both events has been approved by the KDHA committee. This time the men’s winners were to be presented the P.. Thangavelu trophy and women’s the Zohara Jumar trophy, Both P. Thangavelu and Zohara Jumar have given a big hand for Kandy Hockey, they still come forward to help.

All one day games postponed

The most looked forward one day cricket games of schools, have been postponed , these one day games brings in thrills, for the present, old boys and the fans. The matches are Trinity College vs St. Anthony’s College, St. Sylvester’s College vs Vidyartha College , Kingswood College vs Dharmaraja College and Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College vs Sri Rahula College

Kingswood sportsmen Rizvy Ibrahim no more

A Few days back Rizvy Ibrahim, who led the Kingswood College 2nd XV rugger team in 1993 and also played for the 1st XV said good bye to this world and was laid to rest. While at school and after school he gave a good support for Kingswood College rugby. He was Gym instructor of Sri Lanka Navy, his son Zain is the present under 16 rugby captain of Kginswood College. Rizvy was the brother of famous rugger players Ibrahim brothers late Raja, Roy, Ronny, Rinny and Nilfer.
