Paceman Dushmantha Chameera performed extremely well to make his presence felt during the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh in Dhaka last week.

The 29-year-old former schoolboy of Maris Stella College, Negombo captured nine wickets from the three matches and was always able to claim early wickets to add pressure to the opposition.

“I am very happy with the way I bowled during this series. I was out of the game for nearly seven months due to injury and then came back for the last West Indies tour,” he said after winning the Man-of-the-Match award.

“I had the opportunity of playing in the West Indies’ ODI matches which helped me to gain a lot of confidence for the Bangladesh series. I think this is a good comeback,” he emphasised.

“I missed a lot of matches due to injuries but now once again I have recovered and hope to do my best for the team and play more matches,” he added.

Chameera joined the national side in 2015 and made his ODI debut against New Zealand in Wellington.

He was capable of consistently hitting speeds of over 140kph and was always a challenge to the batsman and had become the quickest bowler in the country by 23.

He has taken 30 wickets in 28 ODI’S and this was his best figures and the first time in four years that a Sri Lankan bowler had taken a five-wicket haul in an ODI.

Akila Dhananjaya took six wickets against India in 2017. Chameera’s five for 16 in the third and final ODI was the second best bowling performance by a Sri Lankan bowler in ODI against Bangladesh.

Earlier, the former left-arm paceman Chaminda Vaas recorded the best figures of six for 25 against Bangladesh.

Chameera has already played in 11 Test matches with 32 wickets and has claimed 20 wickets in 22 T20Is.
