Manchanayaka lifts Royal with fighting 78 vs. Wesley

Seventeen-year-old Dasis Manchanayaka hit a fighting 78 to help Royal College reach a modest 188 in their first innings on the opening day of their 128th Sir Frank Gunasekera Shield annual Inter-Schools Under-19 cricket fixture against Wesley College, which commenced at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Royal were struggling at 71 for four at one stage but Manchanayaka rescued the side with a superb knock, which included 12 boundaries.

Royal bowlers then hit back strongly as they reduced the Wesleyites to 40 for six at one stage.

However, Anudith Wickramasinghe (25 n.o) and Denuwan Mendis (21) played intelligently to put on 49 runs for the seventh wicket.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fernando struck a fine knock of 103 with 15 boundaries as S. Thomas’ College scored 227 for seven declared in their match against St. Peter’s College which began at Mount Lavinia.
