Wijemanne bags U-14 title at SSC Open

Methvan Wijemanne came from behind with a fine performance to win the Boys’ Under-14 Singles title at the SSC Open Tennis Tournament, which continued at the SSC Courts in Maitland Place yesterday.

The promising schoolboy from Royal College, Colombo conceded the first set 2-6 but rallied magnificently to take the remaining two sets 6-2, 10-4 against his schoolmate Tharuk Marasinghe.

Men’s Doubles final: Yasitha de Silva and Sanka Athukorala beat Dineshkanthan Thangaragah and Gayanga Weerasekara 6-3, 6-4.

Boys’ Under-14 Singles final: Methvan Wijemanne beat Tharuk Marasinghe 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.

Girls’ Under-18 Singles quarter-finals: Anithra Dharmarathne beat Senulya Wijayawardane 6-4, 7-6 (5). Ruvi Lewkebandara beat Nishka Vivekanandan 6-1, 6-0. Vishmi Serasinghe beat Oneli Perera 7-6 (5), 6-1. Nelani Jayasuriya beat Sethmi Sumanaweera 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Boys’ Under-18 Singles quarter-finals: Hasal Ahangama beat Wenuka Kithnula 6-3, 1-0 (retried). Matheesha Nettasinghe beat Nisal Hemakumara 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. Ransath Peiris beat Heshika Perera 6-4, 7-5. Anujaya Abeywickrama beat Vichinthaya Nilaweera 7-6 (4), 7-5.
