A press conference was held by the organizers, Colombo Municipal Council, play ground department at the BRC auditorium on March 18 regarding the Mayor’s Trophy hockey tournament. Mr.Lal Senarath, SS Officer, Mr. Sharm Fernando CEO My Cola Beverages, Mrs. Rukshani Dissanayake, Municipal Commissioner (Attorney at Law), .Mashanka Liyanage, Director Sports & Recreation, M J.M. Naushad, Hockey Secretary, .K.H.L.Kumara, Senior Sports Officer.
The Mayor’s Trophy hockey tournament will be worked off from April 1 to 4 at the Astro Turf Reid Avenue, Colombo 7 ,with a grand opening ceremony on April 1 at 7.am
Twelve teams are due to take part in this tournament which will be divided into four groups and on a league basis.
In group "A" Old D.Senanayakians.Sports Club, Mastaris SC Matale, BRC , "B" Kandy HA, Air Force, Army, "C" Old Royal SC, Old Nalandians SC, Navy, "D" CH & FC, Colombo Municipal Council and Police will battle it out for this prestigious Trophy. The initiative was taken by the Commissioner, Mrs. Rukshani Dissanayake (Attorney at Law), with the support of Mashanka Liyanage (Director Sports & Recreation) , .M.J.M.Naushad who is an Ex National player and an Asian Umpire (Hockey Secretary) is taking great pains to make this a success according to the guidelines given by the Health Ministry to conduct this tournament
This is mainly to popularize and develop hockey in Sri-Lanka and mainly for youngsters in Colombo, to take an interest in this sport which is recognized in the International arena..
It is organised by the, Colombo Municipal Council and the sponsors MAF Cargo , My Cola and SLT are offering fabulous prizes to the winners, runners up and the third placed team to keep this game alive.
