The men’s racing cycle event of the National Sports Festival which was held at Kataragama yesterday was won by Tharindu Sandaruwan.
He was closely followed by Dehiwala Mount Lavinia Municipal Council’s Suranga Ranaweera of Western Province and Sri Lanka Army’s Thushan Rajapaksa also of Western Province.
Sandaruwan clocked a time of 3: 40.34 seconds to complete the distance of 178 kilo metres. Thushan was given a tough time by the two runners up until the finish line closely following the winner separating them by few seconds.
Sandaruwan who was placed fifth last year used all his past experience to overcome the other riders this time even pushing last year’s winner Avishka Madonsa to fifth position This goes on to prove how these riders improved to face this event.
Suranga and Thushan too were in a battle up to the finish line clocking 3:40.35secsonds and 3:40.42 seconds.
The other Riders who came in nearly two minutes later saw around 70 in the bunch. A total of 112 from the total of 220 riders completed the distance yesterday.
Only a minor accident was reported when a dog was knocked down with the rider receiving minor injuries.
