National Sports Festival, a platform for top athletes - Sports Minister

The Ministry of Sports and in collaboration with Nestle Lanka will once again conduct the marathon, cycling and race walking events of the 46th National Sports Festival, on March 26, 27 and 29 at Kataragama.

The marathon event for Men and Women will be held on March 26, race waking for Men and Women on March 27 and cycling for Men and Women on March 29.

“The competitors are very keen to take part in these events and it will be more competitive with a record number of participants vying for honours,” Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa told a media briefing at the Sports Ministry Auditorium in Colombo yesterday.

In fact, there will be 307 competitors in cycling, 171 in marathon and 149 for race walking.

“We are looking for national level players from these events and it has always been a good platform for top athletes,” he explained.

“This event will provide talented athletes across the country to compete at the highest level as we have done since 1972.”

“I’d like to thank our long term partner Nestomalt for continuing to support our key events,” the Minister elaborated.

“We have a plan to conduct 25 cycle races in every District to mark the Sinhala New Year in April and another 25 half-marathons will be conduct to select the best 25 players,” he added.

Meanwhile, Vice-President Corporate Affairs of Nestle, Bandula Egodage said that many past winners such as Jeewan Jyasinghe (cycling), Anuradha Indrajith Cooray (marathon) and P. M. N. Nayananada (race walking) have gone on to represent the country and at International events.
