Manjula likely to take over as president of OTSC

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Trinitians Sports Club will take place today at the club house at 10 a m. , OTSC will elect their new president, According to news,it is going to be former Trinity College tennis player Manjula Weeraratne, who will take up the position and will succeed Lakmal Tennakoon who did a grand job in the last three years. Primal Wijesinghe is likelyto come in as Vice President, hard working Dr.Indika Rathnathilake is sure to continue as secretary with Milinda Jayewardene as Treasurer..

The outgoing office-bearers are - President - Lakmal Tennekoon, Vice Presidents– Dr. Asitha Bandaranyake and Rajindra Gamage, Secretary – Dr. Indika Rathnathilake, Treasurer - Manjula Weeraratne, Sports Secretary - Thusitha de Silva, Social Secretary - Asanka Ranawana, Bar Secretary - Primal Wijesinghe Committee Members – P. Kapilnath, Asitha Wagodapola, Sanjeeva Weerakody and R. Divaharan..

Old Trinitians Sports Club (OTSC), under the presidency of Lakmal Tennekoon a former Kandy SC ruggerite with the backing of his committee and old boys gave a big hand for sports and also gave a face lift to the club house, . . At one time they played rugby which was introduced by Maurice Perera and a few others, which went places . OTSC was affiliated to local sports bodies and took part in both indoor and outdoor sports activities, such as Carrom. Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket, and Basketball and also at one time played rugger in the “A” division competition, football, hockey etc. Once again they are keen in giving a fillip for rugger, cricket, hockey and tennis. Last year they played cricket in the Division III tournament after a long time, and won several matches The side was led by Clifford Fernando and was managed by Asanka Ranawana,

The club is housed in the picturesque environs of Asgiriya with sylvan surroundings reminiscent of an English cricket club. For this club house the man who did the entire spade work was late H.M. Halimdeen who also promoted all sports. It must be remembered that during the presidency of Bimal Fernando, women’s football too was introduced and matches played.

The Old Trinitians Sports Club was formally inaugurated on July 19 1980 with A.G.G. Perera as the first president and the former principal Leonard de Alwis as the secretary,with 53 members elected as founder members.

In 1981, under Dr. S.B. Ellepola’s presidency with Keerthi Ratnayake as secretary, a team was entered for the Daily News Trophy Cricket Tournament with Deva Amunugama doing the needful from the pavilion. This tournament was conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket.The expenses for the season were covered through the profits made from a dance sponsored by Colombo Paints Ltd. In 1982, H.M. Halimdeen came in as president,with S. Blok as the secretary. During this period the club was in luck’s way with the transformation of Asgiriya as a Test venue. The President, Board of Control for Cricket, Old Trinitian, Gamini Dissanayke was also the President of the Trinity OBU.

H.MHalimdeen realized that there was an opportunity of having a club house ideally located near the new stadium. Through the blessing of OBA President, Gamini Dissanayake, who was the chairman of the Asgiriya ground project, the OTSC was able to purchase an old government building for the club premises and with this acquisition the club came into being. . The OTSC building came through the generous support coming from Old Trinitian, Nahil Wijesuriya, who came forward and built the magnificent club house.
