Vidyartha enters rugby season in high spirit

Vidyartha College, Kandy may be the first school to start rugby for the season among the other schools in Kandy and a ceremony was held at the college ground to mark the commencement of the season.

The Vidyartha rugby pool together with the school officials conducted the event on December 26. It was attended by the 1st XV and 2nd XV rugby players with their parents and the officials of the Rugby Development Group of the school. President of the Old Boys Association, Ranjith Weerasinghe was the chief guest accompanied by his wife, Kumudu Weerasinghe. Ranjith Weerasinghe was an all-round sportsman who excelled in athletics and hockey during late sixtees and has captained the Sri Lanka Schools hockey team. Vidyartha has produced some outstanding rugby players including T. B.Wijesinghe, M. Zarook, Sunil Munasinghe, M. Lafir and H. G. Ariyaratne to name a few. The present first fifteen rugby pool of the school were distributed with nutrition packs sponsored by the OBU of the College and mainly by the President of the OBU, Ranjith Weerasinghe. This event was organized to continue with the rugby fixtures throughout the season.

Vidyartha College, Kandy started rugby by playing a special annual rugby match against Ananda College, Colombo for the Sir William Gopallawa Shield. Sir William Gopallawa was a former Municipal Commissioner of Kandy Municipality who became the first executive President of Sri Lanka. He was very supportive towards the improvement of sports abilities of the Kandy Schools when he was the Commissioner of the Kandy Municipality.
