Sakuna does Monaragala Royal proud

Seventeen year old left hand batsman and right arm medium pace bowler Sakuna Nidarshana Liyanage turned in a fine all-round performance for Royal College Moneragala. He was born on 29th January 2003 at Monaragala. He was admitted to Royal College Moneragala in 2008. He passed the O/L exam with 1A’s, 6B’s and 1C’s in 2018. He will sit the A/L exam in Commerce stream in 2021.

Left hand batsman, right arm medium paceman Sakuna commenced his cricket career in 2011 under his first coach Nilantha Jayasinghe at the Primary school big match match held between Royal and Mahanama at Monaragala in 2012.

He represented the school under 13 cricket team in 2014, 2015 & 2016. He scored 531 runs with a century (114) against Malatahthawala National School Wellawaya in his first under 13 schools Cricket season division Three in 2014.

He claimed 29 wickets that season. His best bowling performance was 7 wickets for 18 runs against St. Thomas’ College Bandarawela. He scored more than 300 runs with two fifties and claimed 18 wickets in under 13 inter schools Cricket tournament in 2015 as skipper. He scored over 400 runs with three fifties and claimed 24 wickets in under 13 season in 2016.

Sakuna scored 411 runs with four fifties and claimed 18 wickets in the under 15 schools Cricket season in 2017. He represented Monaragala district team in the Prima champions trophy inter district tournament in the same year..

He scored 481 runs with a century and 2 fifties in the under 15 schools Cricket season in 2018. His best batting performance was 125 against St. Joseph’s College Bandarawela. He represented Monaragala Great Cricket Academy team in the Nelson Mendis Challenge trophy 2013. He was the man of the match runner up in 2018. He was a member of the Sri Lanka Schools under 15 squad.

He scored 347 runs with two fifties and claimed 24 wickets in the under 17 tournament in 2019. He scored 575 runs with a century and three fifties in the under 19 Cricket tournament in 2018/19 as a fresher. He scored 186 runs against Therapuththa National School Ambalantota. He scored over 300 runs with two fifties and claimed 18 wickets in the under 17 tournament in 2020.

He scored 631 runs with a double century and three fifties and claimed 16 wickets in division three . He scored 230 runs against Vijitha Central College Dickwella. He made half centuries against Gamini National School Bentota, Rajasinghe Central College Hanwella and St. Joseph’s College Bandarawela.

He represented Ethimale Cricket Club who were champions in the Monaragala district division III inter club Cricket tournament. He was the man of the match in the final.

He represented Nugegoda SC in the under 23 inter club Cricket tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket. He scored 247 runs with 2 fifties in 6 innings. He maintained a 41.17 average.
