Oshandi Dinethya chess player par excellence

A member of the Sri Lankan under eight team at the World Schools International Chess Championship held in Albania and Gold medalist at the Puttalam District Inter-School Chess Tournament Oshandi Dinethya Madurapperuma brought honour and fame not only to her Alma Mater, Dhammissara National School, Nattandiya but to her motherland too.

She was admitted to her present school in 2016 when Sumathipala de Silva was at the helm of the school and her first class teacher was Mrs.Niluka Damayanthi. Same year she participated at the Inter House Annual Athletic Meet in 80 metres and came first. But she did not continue athletics and commenced Chess under Chinthaka Weerasinghe. Competing at the school contest she came third in the under seven age group and then participated in the Inter-District Tournament and qualified for the finals.

Same year in the All Island Meet she represented her Alma Mater in under eight age group. In 2017 she took part at the Puttalam All Island Meet and was adjudged the Champion in the under seven age group. Then at the All Island Two Star Level Meet she was awarded the Two Star certificate and she took part in the Puttalam District Youth Meet. At the 9th International Rating Championship she won a Bronze medal and she won another Bronze at the Negombo Open Rating International Meet.

As an under eight competitor and at the National Youth BLITZ Class One Kurunegala District Championship in 2018 she came fifth and in the finals in Colombo she was fourth and again at the Puttalam District 2018/19 Chess Tournament under seven age group she was the second runner-up. She won a Gold medal at the Puttalam District Inter School Championship and again in the All Island Schools Meet she came third. With these performances she was selected to the World Schools Championship in Durres, Albania.

This is the first ever instance that a female participated in an International Tournament from Puttalam District. In the under eight age group there were 28 participants and she came fourteenth. After returning she participated in the 14th Asian Schools Championship held at Kalutara and she took part in the BLITZ Chess Class two competition. She was recommended for Sri Lanka Schools Colours and was awarded school Colours too.

Then she was selected to the Schools Chess Championship held in Sri Lanka. In 2019 too she participated at the BLITZ Rapid Classic Test. In the same year she was the under 9 champion at the Puttalam District Youth 2019/20 Chess Championship. She won the fifth place in the all island finals and was selected to the National Chess Pool. Her school became the Best Board One in the under nine event at the finals.

Oshandi has undergone training by a foreign coach from Kazakhstan through online. Her coaches were Kasun Harsha and Rajith Hasantha. Her Principal Anil Pushpakumara is always supportive of her.
