Late burst from Yasir Shah leaves SA in a tricky spot

South Africa were 187 for four at close on the third day of the opening Test against Pakistan in Karachi yesterday, leading by 29 runs.

Keshav Maharaj was unbeaten on two and Quinton de Kock was yet to score as South Africa erased Pakistan's first innings lead of 158 with some brilliant batting at the National Stadium.

Pakistan scored 378 in reply to a South African first innings total of 220.

South Africa's pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada bowled Hasan Ali for 21 to reach 200 wickets in his 44th Test. Rabada, 25, is the third-fastest bowler in the history of Test cricket to reach the milestone. Waqar Younis (7730) and Dale Steyn (7848) are the only two bowlers who got there quicker.

He is the eighth South African to take 200 or more Test wickets.

Pakistan’s last two batsmen had done well to add as many as 70 runs to their overnight 308 for eight, giving the home side a healthy lead of 158.

But thanks to Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen’s resilient half-centuries, South Africa looked good to end the day in a strong position.

However, late in the day, the visitors lost the well-set Markram and van der Dussen, along with Francois du Plessis, to leave them unsteady at 187 for four at stumps.

Pakistan will now be hopeful of triggering a slide, and knocking the visitors out for an achievable target. - (Agencies)
