Knights of the Square Table cc, Anandians Chess Club and Kandy YMCA excel in chess

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka conducted the first ever online inter club chess tournament.In this Kandy YMCAfielded two teams A and B. The Manager - Sanka Amarajana Galagamaarchchi - Old boy of Kingswood and non playing captain Shiraz Liaquath - Old Sylvestrian The teams comprised players like Dhanushka Bandara (Capt) - Old boy Vidyartha, GC Anuruddha - Old boy Vidyartha, Yasantha Jayaweera - Old boy St. Peters, Maheesha Dabarera -Grade 12 schoolboy of Maliyadeva R Illanpooram - Grade13 schoolboy of S Thomas Mount Lavinia.

The CFSLOnline Rapid Cup commenced with 124 players from 24 teams vying with each other to get promoted to group ‘A’. Those battles looked so much interesting and filled with excitement. At the end, top three teams were selected to group ‘A’. In the first round, Anandians Chess Club was able to obtain four points against Pera Knights B . Meanwhile Knights of the Square Table Chess Club, beat Pawn C C – Women and,Beeline Chess Club, Pera Knights – A and Royal Mind Chess Club showed their class by defeating their respective opponents by 3:1.

In the second round Anandians were able to beat Royal Mind Chess Club. Pera Knights started to clear their path to group ‘A’ with a clean sweep over Passed Pawn Woman C C. Meanwhile after a tough round, Knights of the Square Table Chess Club was able to defeat Beeline Chess Club by scoring two and a half points

The battle in third round was between Anandians Chess Club and Knights of the Square Table Chess Club. KandyYMCA ‘A’ was able to defeat Pera Knights ‘A’ and Super Fighters were able to knock-out Kandy YMCA ‘B’ in the fourth round Anandians were able to defeat Super Fighters after a a close fight and points were equally shared among Knights of the Square Table Chess Club and Kandy YMCA ‘A’. The other game went completely in favour of Fischer Chess Club – Girls ‘A’ Team.

At the end of the fifth round Anandians were able to remain on top with the match point they got by drawing the game against Fischer Chess Club – Girls ‘A’ Team. Meanwhile Kandy YMCA ‘A’ was able to maintain their position by winning two and half points against Black and Gold ‘A’ team.

But with the three points Knights of the Square Table C C got,they were able to push down Super Fighters to the fourth place and climbed upto second place.

In the sixth round, Anandians were able to remain at the top of the group by obtaining 3 points against Kandy YMCA ‘A’ team. With that loss, Kandy YMCA ‘A’ team went down to the fifth place and Fischer Chess Club – Girls ‘A’ Team went upto the second place with the three points they got against Jaffna Super Kings.

Knights of the Square Table Chess Club was able to climb to the top of the points table with a clean sweep against Fischer Chess Club – Girls ‘A’ Team. The honours were equally shared among Anandians and Black & Gold ‘A’ while Kandy YMCA ‘A’ came upto third place by defeating Super Fighter by adding two and half points to their total.

Following are the victorious teams and players - Champion Knights of the Square Table Chess Club – Munasinghe Thisura, Kuruppu Supun Dasantha, D. Minul Sanjul, GunarathneMojitha Sathsara and D. Dinul Thisura. Anandians Chess Club –1st Runner Up - Theekshana H G Denuwan, M. Nubairashah Shaikh, C. Lamahewa, Munasinghe Lahiru and Gamage Chathulanka. Kandy YMCA ‘A’ 2nd Runner Up - Illampooran Raguparan, Bandara Dhanushka,Y. Jayaweera, G. Chinathaka Anuruddha and G.W.D.M.Dabarera.

At the end Knights of the Square Table C C, Anandians Chess Club and Kandy YMCA ‘A’ teams were selected to group ‘A’.
