Asithma Lochani an athletic star in the making

Fourteen year old Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Asithma Lochani Pupulewatte is an up and coming athlete of Dhammissara National School Nattandiya. Though her forte is athletics she is participating in Netball and Volleyball also.

Asithma was admitted to the Primary section of Dhammissara National School in 2012 and in the same year at the Inter House Annual Athletic Meet participating in the under 11 age group she won the 100 metres and her team won the 15x4 relay too. In 2016 sports meet their Tug of War Team were the Champions and she captained the team. Participating in the Group Event captained by her they came third in the Divisional Meet.

She shifted to the Senior School of Dhammissara in 2017 and in the 2019 Inter House Meet she won the Discus Throw and Putt Shot Event and in the Divisional she came first in Putt Shot. In the same year taking part in the North Western Province Schools Meet she got Merit Certificates for Discus Throw and Putt Shot. Competing in the under 14 age group at the Puttalam District Tournament she got a Merit and participating in the John Tarbet Meet she got a Merit Certificate in the under 14 age group and in the All Island Meet held at Sugathadasa Stadium she was awarded a Merit. In 2020 she competed in the Under 16 Inter House Meet and her team won the 4x400 metres and she came first in Putt Shot and second in Discus Throw and third in Javelin. In the District Revenue Officers Meet she won the Discus Throw Javelin and Putt Shot and in the Divisional Meet in the under 16 age group she came first in Discus Throw and third in Putt Shot. Her Athletic Coach was Jude Fernando and in Netball too her house won the Championship and she captained the team. Her school reached upto Divisional Level and their coach was Mrs. Trishila and teachers in charge were Mrs. Dammika and Mrs. Thilini respectively.

In 2018 playing in the under 13 age group they were the Inter House Champions and in 2019 too they were the champions and their coaches were Keerthi Jayasekera, Charles Tilakarathne and Mrs Sanjeewani. In the meantime she took part in Netball too and in 2017 she captained the House Team and emerged champions.

In 2018 they participated in the under 14 All Island Milo Tournament in Kandy and same year they were the House Champions and she captained the team. In 2020 she was in the school under 15 Volleyball and Netball Squads. She was well supported by her Principal Anil Pushpakumara and Deputy Principal Mrs. Nilmini Rodrigo and her parents Aruna Kumara Pupulewatte and Nishanthi Athukorala are always supportive of her.
