Jaffna Central’s Viyaskanth does his school proud

Jaffna Central College’s Vijayakanth Viyaskanth in action.

19 years old right arm leg spinner of Jaffna Central College Vijayakanth Viyaskanth made his debut in the Lanka Premier League for champion Jaffna Stallions recently.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth was born on 5th December 2001 at Jaffna. He hadhis education at Jaffna Central College in 2007. He started school Cricket in the under 13 age limit as a right hand batsman and right arm medium paceman under junior coach R. Vinod Kumar in 2014. He scored more than 200 runs in the under 13 division III inter school tournament.

Viyaskanth turned right arm medium paceman to right arm leg spinner under the guidance of Lakshitha Herath, district Cricket coach, R. Vinod Kumar, junior coach and S. Suresh Mohan, senior coach of Jaffna Central College at the end of the under 13 tournament in 2014.

He did not play Cricket in 2015. He claimed more than 20 wickets in the under 15 tournament in 2016. He represented the Jaffna district and Northern province under 15 teams in the Prima Champions Trophy inter district and inter provincial tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket in the same year.

He represented the school under 17 teams in the division two tournament in 2017 and 2018 under S. Suresh Mohan, senior coach of his school. Jaffna Central College under 17 team advanced to the quarter final of the tournament in 2017. He scored over 150 runs as a middle order batsman and he claimed more than 50 wickets in the season of 2017.

His best bowling performance was 5 for 25 runs against Galahitiyawa Central College.

He represented the college under 19 team as a fresher in the season of 2017/18. He scored over 300 runs and he claimed more than 20 wickets. He took 9 wickets in the match against St. John’s College Jaffna and was adjudged best bowler and man of the match in the 112th “Battle of the North” annual big match in 2018.

He represented the Northern province team in the inter provincial under 19 tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket in 2018. He represented the quarter finalist Jaffna Central College under 17 team in the division two tournament in 2018. He scored more than 300 runs with two fifties and claimed more than 30 wickets.

He represented Sri Lanka Under 19’s against India under 19’s in the Youth Test match in July of 2018. He represented Sri Lanka Under 19’s against Australia under 19’s in the Youth Test match in January 2019. He scored over 400 runs and claimed 47 wickets in the under 19 season of 2018/19. He represented the team Dambulla in the Super provincial under 19 tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket in 2019.

He scored over 500 runs with a century and two half centuries and claimed more than 30 wickets as the skipper. He scored over 700 runs with a century and two fifties and claimed 47 wickets with two five wicket hauls in 14 matches in the under 19 season of 2019/20. His best being 100 runs against St. Patrick’s College Jaffna. His best bowling being 5 for 4 runs against Royal College Polonnaruwa.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth made his debut for Jaffna Stallions against Colombo Kings in the LPL tournament at MRICS one day before his 19th birthday. Jaffna Stallions Vijayakanth was introduced into the attack at a vital stage of the innings.

He took a wicket for 29 runs from his 4 overs. His first victim was star batsman Angelo Mathews. he claimed only One wicket for 52 runs in 7 overs in 3 matches against Colombo Kings, Dambulla Viikings and Kandy Tuskers in the LPL.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth can play in the next under 19 schools Cricket season of 2020/21. He wishes to thank .Dr. S.K.Elilventhan, principal of Jaffna Central College, N.
