Top-ranking national badminton players return for training

Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) has called the country’s top-ranked Senior Badminton Pool Players for training at their headquarters, a spokesman for the National Pool told the Daily News, yesterday. The decision was taken after SLB got the green light from the Sports Ministry and other concerned authorities.

They are to begin with a light warmup workout routine over the next week as they have remained home during the recent lockdowns. Nevertheless, the players have stayed in touch with the National Coaches and kept fit during that period, preparing for the upcoming sporting event which has been postponed for over three months, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, SLB is in the process of picking the National Coaches for these pools. The exit of Indonesian Coach Tony Wahyudi after completing his tenure has left a vacancy as well. SLB has also assigned a special Ex-Co team to interview candidates for these positions.

It will be interesting to see how the top gun’s blaze in the local competition, which is expected to resume in September. With the international badminton calendar not fully functional yet, there are no immediate foreign commitments, but SLB is keen to see how best these players perform in this post-COVID-19 situation.

Niluka Karunaratne, Thilini Hendahewa, and Kavidi Sirimanage are world-ranking players; most of the other seniors in the Pool have considerable international experience as well. Dinuka Karunaratne and Achini Ratnasiriare are other key players, while Buwaneka Goonatillake and Sachin Dias are the formidable men’s doubles pair. Dilmi Dias, who was the 2019 Badminton Nationals Champion, will be looking to establish a place at the top. The other unique selection is Rasindu Hendahewa, who had undergone special training in Indonesia.
