Sri Lanka’s beach volleyball team will take part in the Asian Beach Championship which will be held in China from November 28 to December 5, 2020 a 12 member pool comprising six men and six women have been formed and they begun training on June 16 at the National Youth Services Centre, Heiyanthuduwa.
The men’s pool consists of Y.H.S. Malintha Yapa, W.L. Sujeewa Chinthaka, Ashen Rashmika (all three from Sri Lanka Air Force), A.K Indika Tyronne, P.K. Jayan Sanuja, and K.G. Roshan Samantha (all three from Sri Lanka Army).
The women’s pool comprises Kasuni Tharuka Lakshani, W. Shehani Asanga (both from Sri Lanka Navy), Deepika Bandara and Nirmani Sulochana Jayawardana (both from MAS Casualline), Dinesha Prasadani (Sri Lanka Air Force) and C. Madushani Weerasinghe (Sri Lanka Army).
The men’s team will be coached by the experienced Jude Mahesh Perera and assisted by Asanka Pradeep Kumara. The women’s team will be guided by Pubudu Kumara Ekanayake and assisted by Thakshila Niranjali Gunasinghe. The Sri Lankans have been regularly taking part in international beach tournaments and should give of their best at this Asian tourney.
The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF) has decided to commence domestic volleyball tournaments with effect from October this year, according to the Secretary of SLVF A.S. Nalaka.
The SLVF also hopes to conduct the volleyball nationals by end of the year before that the Federation hopes to conduct the Munchee Volleyball Tournament and the popular DSI sponsored Schools Volleyball Tournament.
Several local volleyball tournaments which were to be conducted during May and June did not take place due to the Coronavirus as players had to stop practices due to the curfew imposed in April and May 2020.
