Young Hiruna Sonal Hapuarachchi from St. Peters College, Colombo 04, an outstanding athlete made St. Peters College proud by winning a number of sporting awards such as cups, medals, colours trophies and many valuable certificates in athletics and many more sporting events.

Having commenced his basic education from Asoka Vidyalaya, Horana Sonal started his sporting life as an Under 11 athlete at his school sports meet. Being a very talented and encouraging player, he was placed first in 75m, 100m, high jump and took part in the Horana Divisional games. He took part in Relay, and was placed sixth at the All Sri Lanka Inter School Relay, held at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.

He won the first places in 400m, 800m in the Under 16 category at the Horana Divisional Games in 2014. He qualified for the WP Sports meet in 2017 and won many places there.

He brought fame and honour to his College by receiving awards at the WP level and national level games. In2017 Sonal won first place in 800 meters by clocking 2.16 seconds, at the Junior Sri John Tarbet Sports Competitions, held at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Homagama. Sonal was lucky when he was awarded a sports scholarship to gain entrance to St. Peters College from Asoka Vidyalaya. Sonal Hapuarachchi represented St. Peters College, Colombo 4 and became an outstanding athlete at National Level.

Here are some of Sonal’s achievements and performances in athletics (School Level Divisional Level).

Colombo Division (Under 16 2018): 200m hurdles 1st place, 400m hurdles -1st place, 800m hurdles - 1st place, 400X4, 100X4 1st place .

In 2018 Colombo Zonal Level meet.

U-16 300m hurdles 1st place, 400m first place, 800m first place 400X4 100X4 1st place.

Western Provincial level games in 2018

New meet record (40.02 seconds) 800m Second Place, 400X4, 100X4 1st place.

All Sri Lanka competitions under 16 300m Hurdles 4th place 400X4, 10X4 place

All Sri Lanka Inter School Relay Tournament in 2018

100X4 metres, 400X4 metres mixed Relay first place.

He took post in the National Junior Athletics in 2018 at SugathadasaStadium and won the 5th place in the 800m (2.8 mts) and won the 1st place in 400X4 and 100X4 at Sir John Tarbet Senior Athletics Tournaments in 2018.

Sonals sporting achievements in 2019 are as follows

Colombo Zonal Level

Under 18 400m hurdles, 800m , 400X4 maters, 100X4 maters 1st place.

Western Provincial Level at Sugathadasa Stadium in 2019.

U-18 400m Hurdles 3rd place 800m third , 400X4 first, 100X4 first new meet records.

All Sri Lanka Level in 2019

U- 18 400m Hurdles 3rd place 400X4, 100X4 new meet records first places.

All Sri Lanka Level Relay tournament in 2019 under 18 400X4 1st place (new meet record)

Senior Athletics (Sir John Tarbet) in 2019 400X4 meters, 100X4 metres 1st place.

Hiruna Sonal Hapuarachchi undergoes athletics training under the instructions and guidance of Chanuka M. Kumra a NYSC registered athletic coach and sports instructor who trains students at several schools in the Western province.
