The Dialog Inter-Club Rugby Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) sponsored by Dialog Axiata for 2020/21 is scheduled to kick off from the first week of November.
The premier club tournament will involve eight clubs awaiting Sports Ministry and the Health Ministry approval in due course. According to the governing body, SLR the sponsors-Dialog Axiata have granted their consent to go ahead with the tournament with prior approvals from the relevant authorities.
This year’s tournament is set to be confronted in the same format like the last season. The first, second and the super round will be followed by the knockout tourney. The SLR is quite optimistic that if things go smoothly without any interruption, they are likely to conclude the tournament either in March or April next year.
The 2019/20 tournament came to a standstill after the outbreak of Covid-19 in last March, with the Super Round matches to complete. Kandy Sports Club became the undisputed team to continue their winning streak by winning the League. Police Sports Club, a much rejuvenated side than the previous seasons, surprised all other opponents to occupy the second slot in the points table.
Havelocks Sports Club was dropped down to the third position while the new looked Colombo Rugby and Football Club(CR & FC) outfit surged ahead to occupy the fourth place. Army Sports Club another unpredictable team, which had mixed fortunes, remained fifth while Navy Sports Club occupied the sixth position.
Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH & FC) had disastrous season. A team with immense talent filled with national players, failed to make an impact as they were pushed down to seventh place.Air Force Sports Club retained the last position in the Points table.
“It’s good if we can commence the next season as scheduled. We hope and pray that the relevant authorities will grant us the permission to go ahead with the scheduled plan. In the meantime we are awaiting to see the school's tournament also to resume, which got interrupted in March.” said Lasitha Gunaratne, President, SLR.
