2011 WC match fixing inquiry report sent to AG for advice

The report of the match-fixing allegations inquiry conducted in connection with the 2011 cricket World Cup has been directed to the Attorney General (AG) for legal advice and future course of action said the Sports Ministry Secretary K.D.S Ruwanchandra.

Former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage's allegation that the 2011 cricket World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India played at Mumbai was fixed, raised in last June.

The Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma has ordered the Sports Ministry secretary to investigate the matter through the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Sports Ministry headed by Director SSP Jagath Fonseka.

The SIU recorded statements from Aluthgamage, Sri Lanka cricketing legends Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara, and cricketer Upul Tharanga.

“However there is no evidence to prove the 14- allegations raised by former Minister Aluthgamage. The International Cricket Council (ICC) too has not responded with regard to the allegations. It has also not even commence any investigation”, the Chief of the SIU said.

Especially ICC Anti-corruption Unit General Manager Alex Marshell said, “The ICC Integrity Unit has looked into the recent allegations regarding the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final 2011. At this time, we have not been presented with any evidence that supports the claims, which would allow an investigation under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. There is no record of any letter regarding this matter sent by the then Sri Lanka Sports Minister to the ICC. We have no reason to doubt the integrity of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final 2011”.
