Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to include 20 premier umpires to their contract list for the first time in a major boost to raise the standard and to uplift the wellbeing of cricket umpires in the country.
SLC would provide a fixed monthly payment for these 20 umpires who would be divide into three categories, namely International, Emerging, and Level-1.
All other Test playing nations have provided contracts for their umpires but this is the first time in the history that umpires in Sri Lanka are provided with contracts.
This was revealed by the Chairman of the Umpires Committee, Deepal Madurapperuma who had initiated this move along with Sri Lanka’s ICC Elite Umpire Kumar Dharmasena.
In fact, Dharmasenahas been the key player in this move and has acted as the advisor for the Umpires Committee on a voluntary basis.
“We have four umpires for International matches and six umpires in the Emerging category and 10 umpires in the Level-1 category,” Madurapperuma told the Daily News yesterday.
“I am glad that the SLC under the Chairmanship of Shammi Silva has provided their consent for this move and very soon we hope to finalise the matter,” added Madurapperuma.
“Lyndon Hannibal, Ravindra Wimalasiri, Prageeth Rambukwella, and Ruchira Palliyaguruge are the four international umpires.”
“We also have six emerging umpires but we have not yet announced the names. The third category is Level-1 with a total of 10 umpires,” he elaborated. “The benefit the umpires would have from this contract is that they will receive a monthly payment from the SLC. This is of course in addition to the usual match fees.”
“All other Test playing nations have provided contracts to their panel one umpires except in Sri Lanka. This is the first time that we are going to provide contracts for the umpires,” stressed Madurapperuma.
“Everything has been sorted out with the SLC and the only thing is that we have to get the approval from the Management Committee and the Executive Committee.”
“Next week we are having a Management Committee Meeting and after that, it will be forwarded to the Executive Committee. As soon as we get the approval we are going ahead with the contracts,” added Madurapperuma.
