The Sri Lanka Equestrian Association headed by Suranjith Premadasa has taken steps to assist the Pony and horse owners in Nuwara Eliya, to eliviate the financial difficulties created to them due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.
The main concentration of horses and ponies in Sri Lanka are based in Nuwara Eliya with almost all owners depend to earn their living and maintenance of Ponies and horses by using them especially during the festival season to earn their living. With the introduction of the curfew due to Covid-19 the expected holiday makers to Nuwara Eliya could not visit and these owners were left in the lurch.
They were unable to maintain their stables and found it difficult to feed their animals due to lack of funds and this was brought to the notice of Sri Lanka Equestrian Association by these Owners.
On hearing the sad plight of these owners, President of SLE Association Suranjith Premadasa made a request to the Federation of Equestrian Internationale (FEI) the world governing body for assistance to upkeep these animals.
His request brought in good results with the governing body agreeing to donate animal food for two months minus any costs. The food was received to Sri Lanka two weeks ago and President took quick steps to distribut these food to 240 Pony and horse owners in Nuwara Eliya at a ceremony.
Before the distribution of food a team of Veterinarians led by Dr. Neville de Silva inspected the food. The Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council Chandana Lal too was present at the ceremony.
