A fatal motor accident that took place at Katupotha, Kurunegala last Monday (15) claimed the life of cricket scorer and former member of the Sri Lanka womens cricket pool, Poojani Liyanage. She was 33 years at the time of her unfortunate demise.
Poojani who hailed from Anuradhapura was a student of Walisinghe Harischandra College Anuradhapura. A wily right arm leg spin bowler, Poojani entered the cricketing arena in 2001 representing Shakthi Sports Club Anuradhapura. She represented the club until 2006 and the following year she was contracted as a member of the CCC women’s cricket team. After a two year stint with CCC she moved on to Colts Cricket Club which she represented untill the time of her demise. Poojani had the distinction of leading the Colts team at the women’s first class cricket tournament in the 2016/2017 season.
Poojani was a member of the Sri Lanka women’s cricket pool but was never able to realise her dream of making a place in the final eleven. She represented Sri Lanka as a member of the Sri Lanka women’s A team in a triangular series with Australia women’s A team and an England Cricket Academy team in 2016. She captured four wickets conceding 100 runs with best figure of 2/40 against the England team.
Poojani took up scoring as a profession in 2010 after resigning from the Sri Lanka women’s squad. Her love and dedication for cricket and scoring saw her being named the best female scorer by the Sri Lanka Scorers Association at its awards presentation held in 2016.
Her cortage lies at rest at No 54 Mahapalidukulama, Anuradhapura and the cremation is to take place at 4pm at the Mahapaladikulama cemetry on Thursday (18th).
