A top hockey player and coach GG Dharmaratne has been promoted as the head of sports of the Kandy Municipal Council Playgrounds Department. He takes over from Kelum Shanthasiri.
Dharmaratne started as a Playground instructor in 1989 when Dr. Deva Athureliya was head. He holds a sports diploma of the sports ministry and completed high performance development in hockey 2005 in Chennai.
At school, he played and led the hockey teams of all age groups and was coached by late IM Anver.
He also led the Kandy district and Central province teams. He started his club hockey with KH&FC.
He took up coaching and his first school was Berawartes College and later Vidyartha College, Mahamaya Girls College, Dharmaraja College and St. Anthony’s Girls College. He produced many national players.
He was also the Sri Lanka national women's hockey team head coach for five years and helped the country to win the silver medal at SAG games in 2016 in India.
He is also a qualified umpire and the present secretary of Sri Lanka Hockey Federation coaching panel and vice president of the Kandy District Hockey Association.
