Former Trinity College and Havelock SC rugby player Rihal W. Madugalle died at the age of 79 in Kandy at his residence at D.S. Senanayake Vidiya, opposite Trinity College on April 9 and was cremated the following day at the Mahiyawa cemetery.
Madugalle played rugby for Trinity first XV in 1958, 1959 and 1960 as a wing-three quarter under the captaincies of Ken de Joot, Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Eric Roles.
Some of his team mates during the three years were M Talwatte, A.R.M Azain, N. Maralande, J. Disas de Singhe, Rohan H. Wijenayake, Mike G de Alwis, E.D.K. Roles, Ken J. Murray, J.S. Ratwatte, T.P. Hermon, J.W. Jayawardene, G.A. Fernando, T.N. Chanchi, R. Madena, C.H. Seneviratne, N.T.E. Brohier, T.N. Halangoda, P.A. Buultjens, and his brother N.T. Madugalle. Leaving school he turned up for Havelock SC.
Madugalle was in the Trinity OBA committee and later was a long standing manager of the Trinity College OBA office from 2011 to 2020. By profession he was an accountant and worked as the finance director at Paddy Marketing Board and was CEO of the Chamber of Commerce (Kandy). He was also an active member of the Kandy Rotary Club and served as president in 1997/98 as well as president of Anuradhapura branch. He was also one time Basnayake Nilame of the Pasgama Sri Natha Devalaya.
He leaves behind his wife Kumari, son Dammika, daughter Nomali, daughter-in-law Nadeeja, son-in-law Yasantha and grand children Kushan, Dinuli, Tenuli and Kaymi.
