The Clifford Cup knockout inter-club rugby tournament that usually follows the league championships has been postponed for next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sri Lanka Rugby president Lasitha Gunaratne said that defending champions of the Dialog Rugby League, Kandy Sports Club was crowned as champions for the 2019/20 season after the council meeting of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR).

“The decision was made following requests made by clubs after the Covid-19 outbreak and the curfew that has been imposed in the country. SLR opted to conclude the league and give Kandy Sports Club the title,” said Gunaratne.

“We also decided not to proceed with the planned Super Round due to the current situation in the country and also to postpone the Clifford Cup knockout for next year,” he said.

“Currently, there will be no rugby played and we will resume when the situation becomes normal,” he added.

However Gunaratne stated that the future of the Sevens tournament that was scheduled to follow the knockout at the end of March was yet to be decided. “It will be decided by the council depending on the situation in the country,” he said.

Kandy Sports Club finished first and Police SC second in the Cup championship. Last year’s runner-up and Clifford Cup champions Havelock Sports Club were placed third.

Army SC and Navy SC were given first and second places in the Plate championship respectively with CH and FC placed third.
