Test discard Thirimanne to lead SLC President’s team

Sri Lanka batsman Lahiru Thirimanne who was left out of the Test squad named for the two-Test series against England starting next week in Galle has been picked to lead the Sri Lanka Cricket President’s XI team in the four-day warm-up match against the tourists starting today at the P Sara Oval.

A 15-member squad was selected for the match but Bhanuka Rajapaksa has sustained an injury and will not be available for selection.

The selectors will be having a close look at spinners Ramesh Mendis (off-spinner) and 18-year-old right-arm leg-spinner Kavindu Nadeeshan who recently took part in the Under 19 World Cup in South Africa, as a replacement in the Test squad for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga.

Lahiru Thirimanne (captain), Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Perera, Shehan Jayasuriya, Roshen Silva, Minod Bhanuka, Ramesh Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando, Mohamed Shiraz, Nisala Tharaka, Ashen Bandara, Kavindu Nadeeshan.
