Minul and Dasuni clinch chess titles

Dasuni Mendis-Minul Doluweera

Minul Doluweera of Royal College and Dasuni Mendis of Visakha Vidyalaya emerged victorius at the Junior National and Junior Girls National Chess Championships respectively. Both of them being former National Champions of Sri Lanka started the event as the top seeds with a clear lead in rating over those ranked second.

They certainly lived up to their reputations with Minul getting an unbeaten 6.5/7 and Dasuni getting 6/7, surprising performances considering they hadn’t played chess competitively for a while, having sat for their A/L examinations just a week before the event.

Accordingly they were eligible to represent Sri Lanka at the World Junior and World Girls Junior Chess Championship held in New Delhi, India, in which Minul produced the best results from the Sri Lankan contingent.
