Trinity fire opening salvo as record number enter fray

Trinity College, Kandy kept a clean sheet on the opening day of the 102nd Stubbs Shield Boxing Championship held as part of the All Island Schools Games which got underway at the Jayathilaka Stadium in Nawalapitiya on Sunday.

A record number of 146 entries (boys and girls) from 43 schools, including St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo, are taking part in this blue riband event in the schools boxing calendar, according to K.K. Sunil, general secretary of the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.

Waruna Bandara and Hamdan Faizal of Trinity scored impressive wins in the Junior Boys Fly and Bantam weight classes respectively. Bandara outclassed his opponent from Kadugannawa MV while Faizal earned a unanimous points decision against Pilimithalawa MMV’s Rathnayaka.

Defending champions St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy suffered a reversal against T. Nagarajah of Vipulananda MV, Vavuniya in their opening bout before M.A.K. Manathunga and M.M.M. Paris restored parity.

Former champions Vidyartha College, Kandy had two winners in V. Samson and W.M.S.C. Wijesooriya but also suffered two losses upsetting their calculations.

Mahanama College, Colombo also had two impressive winners on the first day - W.K.O. Mendis Abeysekera and E.M.D.S. de Seram.

P.V.S. Himanjith of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia won a unanimous decision in the Royal-Thomian duel against Royalist H.E. Bimsara.
