Sri Lanka’s boxing chief Dian Gomes has been inducted into the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Women’s Commission, it has been officially confirmed on Wednesday.
It is another feather in the hat of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) president who has been the catalyst for the resurgence of boxing in the country.
A former Junior National Flyweight boxing champion, Dian has been an ardent follower of the sport and has been actively engaged in its administration for the past 15 years. He was elected as president of the BASL for eight consecutive years.
He was instrumental in introducing corporate thinking to the sport while implementing a long-term strategic plan for the Association, which resulted in a boxer participating in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 after a lapse of 40 years.
Dian has also served in the International Boxing Associations (AIBA) Women’s Commission (2014 to date) and was the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Sport (CABOS).
Dian, 62, is passionate about working regionally and globally with to develop the sport of boxing and is determined to win a medal at the Olympic Games for Sri Lanka through boxing. He also served as the Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka from 2004-2016. He was instrumental in the country winning three medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, a victory after 68 years for Sri Lanka.
The President of ASBC and AIBA Vice-President Anas Alotaiba, the Executive Director of ASBC Ali Salameh and the ASBC management informed all Asian National Federations regarding the newly appointed members of the ASBC Commissions.
Based on the Asian Boxing Confederation’s Constitution Article 38.3/F, ASBC president Anas Alotaiba and the whole management is ready to work with the newly appointed members to develop Asia’s boxing in all regions of the continent and discuss the all future programs through the Commission meetings.
The new generations of the officials have been added to the ASBC Commissions to lead Asian’s boxing life into a new direction. The ASBC Commission members are representative of all regions of the Asian continent and the approved applicants are from 24 different countries.
Next to the traditional six Commissions, the management of ASBC established the new ASBC Marketing Commission. The ASBC Coaches Commission, the ASBC Competition Commission, the ASBC Refereeing and Judging Commission, the ASBC Women’s Commission, the ASBC Medical Commission, and the ASBC Youth Commission are the previous and traditional five governing bodies.
