Ruggerite Lakmal Tennakoon OTSC president

Lakmal Tennakoon a fine ruggerite, who played for the school as a forward under Rohan Ranaraja, and later for Kandy SC and Old Trinitians SC was re-elected as president of the Old Trinitians Sports Club last Sunday at the AGM held at their clubhouse. A few weeks back the OTSC successfully conducted the annual tag rugby tournament and Lakmal’s main aim is to give a hand for sports. Old Trinitians SC play division III cricket in the Central Province tournament, they also give a big hand for hockey and cue sports.

The new committee President Lakmal Tennakoon, Vice Presidents - Dr. Asitha Bandaranayake, R.C. Gamage, Secretary Dr. Indika Ratnathilake, Treasurer M.C. Weeraratne, Bar Secretary Primal Wijesinghe, Social Secretary Asanka Ranawana, Sports Secretary Thusitha De Silva, Committee - R. Divagaran, Sanjeewa Weerakkody, Asitha Wegodapola, and P. Kapilnath. Then the Trustees are Nahil Wijesooriya, Mohan Samarakoon, and Niko De Silva.

Hundreds of mourners at Sumedha’s funeral

Hundreds of mourners, including cricketers and Kandy District Cricket Association officials, attended the funeral of St. Anthony’s College and Kandy cricketer Sumedha Arrawawela last Saturday. A fine cricketer he died at the age of 48. Sumedha revived the art of batting at St. Anthony’s College. He made his debut in the late 1980’s at Katugastota. Among those who attended the funeral were several who learned to play cricket from his school. Mourners called his death a great loss for cricket in Kandy. Summedha was an influential figure in club cricket and later a mentor of the KDCA. He played cricket for St. Anthony's College in the late 1980’s and later played for Old Antonians, Kandy Youth CC, Kandy CC, Galle CC, and Wattala CC and also coached Kandy CC. He gave a big hand for the Kandy District Cricket Association as an administrative officer.

Old v Present Kingswoodians football

The annual Old vs Present Kingswood College football encounter took place last Sunday at the Randle hills. In the over 40 vs under 16 game the Old boys won 3-1. The best player’s award in this game went to U16 Sam Steven and old boy T.A. Miskin. In the under 20 game, the present boys won by 3 goals to 1. Present boy Hirusha Sampath and old boy Isuru Maduwantha won the best players’ awards.

Rugby tournament in memory of Alex

Kandy’s rugby fraternity is to come out with a rugby tournament in memory of rugby legend Alex Lazarus. He hailed from the famous Lazarus family. He was a well known personality in the rugby field. At the time of his death, he was the Director of Sports at his school Trinity College. Earlier he was senior boarding housemaster. Lazarus was a top rugby forward, starting as a prop at Trinity College in the mid 1960’s and his last year in 1967 played under the leadership of Ajith Abeyaratne. Lazarus got his rugby colours in 1966. Soon after school, he played for CH & FC, Kandy Lake Club, Kandy RFC, Kandy Sports Club, and Up-Country.

Gladwin to promote sports

Gladwin Canagasabey Principal of Kandy Gateway College is all out to promote sports. This school was one of the first International schools, formerly known as Kandy International School and brought under the wings of Gateway in 2000. Canagasabey started his career in 1988 as a Graduate teacher. Later he joined the Eastern University of Sri Lanka as the Head of Sports and Physical Education where he went onto serve for 11 years. He was also the headmaster of S. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa before joining Gateway. He was one time Vice Principal of Trinity College. He served as the Registrar at the prestigious General Sir John Kotelawela Defence University Ratmalana and as the Manager of Hillwood College Kandy. He is a National Champion in Javelin throw and Shot Putt.

Ratnayake CC Walla overall girls and mixed school champions

In the All Island schools relay carnival, the overall girl’s championship was won by A. Ratnayake Central College Walla. They scored 125 points and emerged champions in the Under 16, 18 and 20 girl’s events, 46 points ahead of the runner-up. They dominated the under 16 relay with four new records in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 meters and medley relay. In the boy’s championship, they were placed second and in the mixed schools championship, they were number one.

Kandy schoolboys do well at TT

Kandy products did well at the open men and women table tennis tournament, which is the all-island open ranking tournament, which took place at Mt. Lavinia. In the Under 8 boys Yasanage Rumeshitha of Vidyartha College was runner-up, in under 10 Agasthya Anananditha of Vidyartha College was runner-up, in under 12 Senul Ratnayake of Dharmaraja College was runner-up, under 18 S. Navaratne of Kingswood College was runner-up. In the Novices Nuwan Charma Vidyartha College finished runner-up, in the Intermediate Easindu Jayasundara of Kingswood College was champion, in the open Krishan Wickramaratne of Vidyartha College was runner-up.

Kandy Gateway no. 2 in TT

Gateway College Kandy emerged as Under 12 and 14 runners-up at the Table Tennis Tournament 2019 organized by Gateway College Colombo at their Indoor Court.

The winning teams comprised players like Mithara Premadasa, Chamathka Ratnayake, Lisara Ranaweera, Harini Cabral, Shinali Ratnayake, Sevni Jayamanna. The coach and TIC was Himali Abeyratne.

CPCA donates one million

Central Province Cricket Association headed by Sarath Ekanayake and Janaka Pathirane, have come forward and given a hand to St. Sylvester’s College with a donation of Rupees ten lakhs to lay down turf wickets for the school for practice. The school has been lacking in this facility for quite a long time and they have to practice on a matting wicket and play matches on turf wickets.

Eight from Kandy SC

Sri Lanka Rugby selectors have named a 28 squad in preparation for the Olympic qualifiers WO19 of which eight players are from Kandy Sports Club - Jason Dissanayake, Danusha Dayan, Danushka Ranjan, Srinath Sooriyanandara, Kavindu Perera, Tarinda Ratwatte, Richard Dharmapala and Thilina Bandara.

DS in pre-quarters

D.S.Senanayake College Kandy, earlier known as Senkadagala MV have done well in cricket, they have entered the pre-quarters in the u-17 division III tournament, a school with limited facilities but gives a big hand for cricket.

Seethadevi, Swarnamali girls do well in hockey

Seethadevi girls school emerged champions and Swarnamali Balika runner-up and St. Anthony’s Convent came up to the semis. The other Kandy schools that took part were Pushpadana Girls College, Mahanama Girls College and Matale’s Sangamitta Girls College. The tournament was held in Matale to pick the three best girls teams from Central Province for the All island Schools hockey championship tournament which will be played at the Asgiriya Stadium from October 12 to 15. The Central Province Education Ministry is handling the organizing part.

Special prayer for Michael

A special prayer service was held in Kandy in memory of cricket and rugby lover Michael de Zoysa who passed away a few days back and the funeral took place on Wednesday.

He gave a big hand for cricket, and all his good work will be remembered forever. Whenever there is an international cricket match is played in Kandy he was always present.

Boxing coaches’ camp

It was good to see about 50 boxing coaches at the two-day camp held at the Linea Gymnasium at Pallekelle. It was organized by the Sri Lanka Boxing Association. At one time boxing was dominated by Kandy schools. More camps should be held in Kandy to promote the sport.

Kamel captain, Tennakoon vice-captain SACK

St. Anthony’s College have been promoted to Division I the top division in the first XI schools circuit this season and have named M.S.M. Kamel a top allrounder as their captain and his deputy will be T.M.S.H. Tennakoon a talented paceman.

They were to play their first game against Moratu Vidyalaya on September 27 and 28 but had to postpone the fixture due to bad weather. Today is the second day of their game against Wesley College. Suneth Gunathilake continues as coach and Lenin Jayasinghe as MIC.

School cricket lacks turf wickets

Sports in Kandy play a significant role in the lives of the folks living here, representing all races in the country.

The inter-school cricket season has started and in the good old days, only six schools played. Today there are over 12 schools and the game, lacks proper playing fields.

Except for St. Anthony’s, Sri Rahula, Trinity, and Dharmaraja all other schools like Vidyartha, St. Sylvester’s, Kingswood, Sri Sumangala are finding it difficult to play matches because they don’t have proper grounds with turf wickets.
