Methwan Wijemanne and Senuk Herath advanced to the next second as they won their first round matches of the ATF Junior 14 and under first week - Colombo tennis tournament commenced at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) hard courts yesterday.
Fifth seed Methwan beat his Saudi Arabian counterpart Nawaf Alswaidan in easy straight sets 6/0, 6/2 while Senuk defeated his Hong Kong China opponent seventh seed Devansh Punjabi in a much contested three setter 4/6, 6/3, 6/3. Senuk recovered from a first set defeat to win the following two sets and sealed his victory in a convincing manner. The prominent ATF tournament will have four events namely boys’ singles, girls singles, boys’ doubles and girls doubles and SLTA host the tournament under the supervision of Asian Tennis Federation. Junior players from India, Hong Kong China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan and host Sri Lanka will battle for supremacy in the tournament.
Among the other Sri Lankans who qualified for the boys’ singles main draw second round were top seed Jaitra De Saram, Meneshka Levin Ratnasingham, Methvan Wijemanne, Lisal Goonatilleke, Anujaya Abeywickrama, Kiran Vairavanathan, Harieshwar Parameshwaran, Vichinthya Nilaweera and Sandaru Guruge.
