Selectors to follow resignation call of coaching staff

The national cricket selection committee could be revamped by Sports Minister Harin Fernando who has called for the resignation of the entire coaching staff following Sri Lanka’s dismal performance at the World Cup in England and Wales.

The four-member selection panel headed by Ashantha de Mel may also be asked to hand in their resignations, sources close the minister told Daily News.

Brendon Kuruppu, Chaminda Mendis and Hemantha Wickremaratne are the other members of the selection committee.

The selectors have also come under fire after Sri Lanka recorded only three wins at the World Cup to be place sixth.

However, De Mel is likely to be reappointed as chief selector, the source added.

SLC confirmed that it is considering a complete overhaul of the coaching structure following the ODI home series against Bangladesh which is set to start of July 26.

Sri Lanka’s coaching staff currently consists of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, batting coach Jon Lewis, and fielding coach Steve Rixon.

Both Rixon and Lewis had joined up with SLC up until the end of the 2019 World Cup, and as such their contracts are up for renewal.

The sports minister’s demand for a resignation mainly relates to Hathurusingha, who still has 16 months left on the lucrative contract he signed when he took over in January 2018.
