Former Antonian, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka flanker Nihal ‘Viper’ Gunaratne has taken over as head coach of CH and FC for the upcoming rugby season.
Gunaratne coached Army last season and is presently in-charge of Isipathana..
Under his guidance, Army ruggerites pulled off a stunning win over his
former club Kandy SC at Nittawela in December and also beat the formidable CH and FC at Police Park. During his playing days, he was crash-tackling loose forward. He played for the Outstation Schools in 1977 and Combined Schools. Straight from school, he played for Kandy SC coached by late Col. Bertie Dais in 1977. He led the side in 1984 and also the Up-Country XV. He first represented Sri Lanka in 1979 and in the 1982 Asiad under Saman Jayasinghe. He is a professionally qualified coach being a World Rugby (IRB) Licensed Coach Educator from 2008, IRB Level 3 Coach, member of the IRB’s Elite Coaching panel and was the Manager Development of Sri Lanka Rugby from 2013 to 2015.
He was also coach of St. Anthony’s College in 2016 and also coached Sri Lanka Under 20 in 2007.
