Rugby stars Saranga, Dassanayake suspended, pending initial inquiry by Marso

Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) have suspended national players Sajith Saranga of CH and FC and Theekshana Dassanayake of Havelocks pending an inquiry headed by former Sri Lanka stalwart Hafeez Marso.

Lock forward Saranga pulled out of the Sri Lanka squad on the eve of their departure to Chinese Taipei for the Asia Rugby Championship Division I citing an injury while centre Dassanayake was sent back home after playing the first game against Philippines following an incident of alleged theft.

“Dassanayake’s is a straightforward incident of allegedly stealing a watch from a hotel staff in Taiwan while Saranga pulled out saying he was injured. But the medical report says there are no new injuries. We are in doubt whether he has pulled out because of injury or any other reason. We cannot accept trade union action by players,” said SLR president Lasitha Gunaratne.

SLR’s chief medical officer Dr. Namith Sankalpana has been requested to assist Marso in the inquiry related to Saranga’s withdrawal.

“They (SLR) wanted to investigate those two matters. My task is basically a fact-finding inquiry to see whether there is a prima facie case to proceed with the accused. Based on it, the Judicial Committee will hear the case formally. I am the policeman and they (SLR) are the court of law,” said Marso, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police who has 38 years of experience in law enforcement and field of intelligence gathering.

“I will have to peruse the reports of managers and other evidence. What is being reported in newspapers may be useful to gather information and in some cases to initiate and inquiry,” said Marso who served as Additional Director of State Intelligence Service and Director of Special Branch.
