Postponing SLC elections Sports Minister must take responsibility - De Silva

Sri Lanka Cricket presidential candidate Mohan de Silva said that postponing the SLC election was a huge issue faced by the country and the Sports Minister should take responsibility if they faced any problems with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ICC had given February 9 as the deadline to hold elections and the Ministry of Sports had decided to hold it on February 7, but due to a discrepancy in a gazette notification which empowers the Sports Minister to appoint a three-member Advisory Board to hear polls-related appeals, the election has been further postponed till February 21.

Speaking at a press conference held at the SSC pavilion yesterday, De Silva further said that they had done immense service to Sri Lanka cricket and was confident of winning the election as they are assured of nearly 100 votes.

“No one has the right to blame us for corruption because during our term we succeeded in selling television rights to US$52 million make SLC a profitable organisation.

Shammi Silva also shared his views and said, “When we took over in 2016, SLC faced a lot of financial issues but we have paid all the debts within a year and also made nearly Rs. one billion profit.”

“In the past two years we were in office we did not face any kind of allegations from the ICC. After we are elected we will ask the ICC why they have said Sri Lanka is the most corrupt country.”

Bandula Dissanayake, Ravin Wickremaratne, Lalith Rambukwella and Lasantha Wickramatunge also graced the occasion.
