Praveen leads St. John’s Panadura this year

The fourth year all rounder Praveen Sandaml Wickramadara is captaining the first eleven cricket team of St. John’s College Panadura in the ongoing cricket season for the year 2018/19. He bats rights hand and bowls right arm medium pace.

He was first admitted to the grade one of Junior School Hirana Panadura in 2005 and he was there upto year 2014.

Praveen’s favourite game from his smaller days is cricket but he did not get the opportunity to play cricket at school as there is not a single sport at this school during his period. But he played softball cricket with neighbouring friends.

Anyhow he got an opportunity to enter one of the prestigious educational institutions of Panadura St. Johns College when Thilak de Silva was at the helm of the school. In the first year at his new school in 2015 he attended under 17 cricket practices and got selected under Sithum Peiris and played in six matches and in the following year as a middle order batsman he got 180 runs and eleven scalps.

As an under 17 firt year he played for the annual limited overs match against their arch rivals Royal College Panadura. In the following year 2016/2017 under Nadun Ahangama he played in all the matches including the Big Match and the limited overs match in the same year Johnians clinched the All Island under 19 division two championship by beating St. Thomas College Matara and were promoted to division one of the inter schools under 19 cricket tournament. His contribution was 420 runs and captured 28 wickets.

Last year playing in the under 19 division one cricket tournament he scored 574 runs with top score of 94 runs in the Big Match and captured 36 wickets including two five wicket hauls against Maris Stella College and St. Anthony’s College Wattala respectively.

This year Johnians is coached by one of their former cricket captains Vinosh Perera and so far Johnians have played five matches during this year and won two, one ended in no decision and two were drawn and they have seven more matches in the card excluding the Big Match and the One Dayers. His coaches during this period were G. Ranasinghe, Nalinda Dissanayake and Presently Vinosh Perera.

He played in the Western Province South Cricket team this year under Vidyalian Nishan Madushka. His Principal Harshana Peiris and Master in Charge of cricket Upul Gunatilleke are extending their fullest support for cricket. Johnians beat Panadura Royalists last year after fourteen years.
