Sri Lanka ruggerites left last night by Thai airways for the first edition of the Asian Rugby Sevens 2017, which will be worked off at the King’s Park Sports Ground 11 Wylie Path, Ho Man Tin, Kowloon on Friday 1 and Saturday 2. The second leg will be hosted by South Korea in late September while the third and final leg will come to Colombo in mid-October.
The participating teams – Pool “A”: Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Philippines. Pool “B”: Sri Lanka, South Korea, Japan and Taipei. Sri Lanka will play the first match with Japan, and the second game with Chinese Taipei and third game against South Korea
Inthi Marikar High performance Director is quietly confident that his team with some new faces can continue their good form in this tournament. He feels that the intensity at training has prepared the players well for the tournament.
The coach Peter Woods had to nurse some of the players back to fitness, in order to get them into good form. The selectors picked the best available players.
“These new faces in the team may make mistakes, but that is part of the growth of any player. For this sevens Sri Lanka has a balanced side, with a number of new faces and some exciting talent coming off the touch line. They all are all out to give a good account,” said Marikar.
The match schedules are Friday, 1st September Sri Lanka vs Japan, South Korea vs Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong vs Malaysia, China vs Philippines, Sri Lanka vs Chinese Taipei, South Korea vs Japan, Hong Kong vs Philippines, China vs Malaysia, Japan vs Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka vs South Korea, Hong Kong vs China, Malaysia vs Philippine. Saturday, 2nd September: Quarterfinals, Semi-finals, Plate final and Cup final. The organizers are Asian Rugby and Hong Kong RFC.
