Kapugedera ruled out of fourth ODI

Chamara Kapugedera

Injuries seem to be following the continued losses suffered by the beleaguered Sri Lanka cricket team with stand-in captain Chamara Kapugedera becoming the latest casualty to join a long list when he was ruled out of the fourth ODI against India scheduled for Thursday at the R Premadasa Stadium.

“Kapugedera has back stiffness and is definitely ruled out of the fourth ODI,” said Sri Lanka cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha yesterday.

“Kapu has been nursing a stiff back before the third ODI but he aggravated it while batting. He is under treatment and will remain in the squad of 15. We expect him to recover for the final ODI on September 3,” he said.

Kapugedera’s injury follows three days after Dinesh Chandimal was ruled out of the series following a hairline fracture on his right thumb while batting during the third ODI at Pallekele on Sunday.

Gurusinha stated that at this juncture they won’t be bringing any new players into the 15-member squad that was named for the five-match series and one-off T20 international.

“Danushka Gunathilaka is likely to recover from a shoulder strain and he will be available for selection for Thursday’s game. We have plenty of other options available in the squad to fill the vacated places,” said Gurusinha. “We could move Milinda Siriwardana to number six and have Thisara Perera at seven.”

With Kapugedera ruled out and Upul Tharanga still serving a two-match ban for slow over rate Sri Lanka will also have to look for a new captain to lead them in the fourth ODI. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga who led Sri Lanka to win the World T20 title in 2014 is in the squad.
