Athletes who skip the National Athletic Championship without a valid reason will be punished, said president of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka Major General Palitha Fernando at a press briefing held in Colombo yesterday. The Athletic Nationals will be held from August 31 to September 2 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama.

Five hundred and fifty four men’s athletes and 183 women’s athletes will take part in this three day event. Those who excel in the nationals will be considered for selection for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

If the Sports Medicine Unit certifies that an athlete will not be able take part due to illness or injury then they will be exempted from taking part in the nationals. All the other athletes should take part, said Fernando. The Anti Doping Unit will conduct tests to find out whether any athlete had taken a banned substance. As no firm has come forward to sponsor the nationals athletic enthusiast the Chairman of M.S.A. Samsudeen and Realty Development has made a donation to meet the expenses of the Athletic Nationals, according to the treasurer of the AASL Shantha de Silva. Also present on the occasion was Secretary of AASL Prema Pinnawela.
