In their endeavour to support National Federations (NFs), the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) requested NFs to submit their requirements for equipment and sought assistance from The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) through the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) for funds to meet the requirements.
After making a request from their higher authority and obtaining approval, ANOC distributed the requested funds through OCA to NOCSL to fulfill the requirements of the NFs.
13 of the 15 NFs who responded within the NOCSL deadline received their requests at a ceremony held at the ‘Hemasiri Fernando’ Auditorium recently.
“It is done for the first time with the assistance of the ANOC. We are here to support the NF’s in whatever way possible, and in principle, to run their day-to-day activities. All these are done for the betterment of the sports and not to canvas for our elections,” said Maxwell de Silva, General Secretary NOCSL.
The Equestrian, Gymnastic, Handball, Judo, Karate, Roller Skating, Surfing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Wrestling, Yachting and Baseball Federations received laptops.
The Weightlifting Federation received a washing machine for the use of the National Pool Athletes while Basketball Federation requested for financial assistance for their administration expenses.
NOCSL had also requested for additional funding through the same project to assist the following athletes who are targeting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games:
Training cost for Chamara Dharmawardana (Judo) in Slovenia for six months and Olympic Qualifiers; training cost for Chamara Milinda in Mongolia for six months and two Olympic Qualifiers; training cost for W. K. L. Nimal (athletics 800m) locally for six months and Olympic Qualifiers; six months overseas training for Sumedha Ranasinghe (Javelin Throw) and two Olympic Qualifiers; Assistance for Niluka Karunaratne (Badminton) to participate in eight Olympic Qualifiers; six months overseas training for Indika Dissanayake for Weightlifting and Olympic Qualifiers.
