Sri Lanka youth cap Nuwanidu Fernando pride of St. Sebastian’s, Moratuwa

Sri Lanka youth cap and former skipper of St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa first eleven team Nuwanidu Fernando gave a sterling batting performance in the last Premier trophy season.

Nuwanidu Fernando scored 151 runs with a century in Premier Under 23 One day tournament. He made a century against Galle CC. He scored 352 runs with a century in the last Premier club season. including a century against BRC.

Right hand batsman and right arm off spinner Nuwanidu Fernando was born on 13th October in 1999 at Moratuwa. He was admitted to St. Sebastian’s College in 2005. He started cricket at the school in 2010 under his first coach Kalpa Fernando. He was selected to the under 13 C team. He scored more than 300 runs in the under 13 division One tournament under coach Rashan Peiris in 2011. Nuwanidu made 380 runs and claimed 22 wickets in the under 13 division One tournament under Nalin Wijesinghe the junior coach with the guidance of Rev. Fr. Bonnie Fernandupulle, the Principal of the school.

He represented the college under 15 teams in 2013 and 2014. He scored more than 350 runs and claimed 25 wickets in under 15 season of 2013. He scored over 450 runs and claimed 20 wickets. He scored a valuable 60 runs in the final match in 2014. He represented Colombo South under 15 team in the Prima Champion trophy inter district cricket tournament in 2013 and 2014. He also represented Western Province South teams in the Prima Champions trophy inter- provincial tournament in 2013 and 2014 conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Nuwanidu represented the college under 17 teams in 2015 and 2016. He played only six matches due to injury in 2015. He scored more than 600 runs and claimed 23 wickets for the Champion St. Sebastian’s under 17 team in 2016. He made 138 runs in 114 balls in the final against Thurstan College Colombo. He was adjudged man of the final . He was also adjudged best batsman and best player runner up in the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket under 17 tournament.

Nuwanidu represented St. Sebastian’s first XI team as a fresher in the season of 2015/16. He played four under 19 cricket seasons for his school under Imal Boteju, the senior coach, ably supported by Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi, principal and Frank Cooray master in charge of the school. He scored 640 runs with four fifties as a fresher. He scored unbeaten 72 runs and was adjudged man of the match in the limited over big match against their arch rivals Prince of Wales in 2016. He scored over 450 runs and claimed 20 wickets in the under 19 season of 2016/17.

Nuwanidu scored over 500 runs with three half centuries in the season of 2017/18. He scored valuable 82 runs in the Battle of Golds in 2018. He scored 946 runs with a century and six half centuries and claimed 28 wickets as the skipper in his last first XI season of 2018/19. He made a fine century and claimed a hat-trick against Prince of Wales College Moratuwa in the Battle of Golds in 2019. He made a half century in the limited over big match in the same year. He scored more than 2400 runs in 50 two day matches in four under 19 school Cricket seasons.

He represented under 19 teams in three provincial tournaments in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He scored 220 runs in 2016, 110 runs in 2017 and 160 runs and claimed 6 wickets in 2018.

Nuwanidu represented the Central Province team in the under 23 provincial tournament in 2017. He scored 230 runs. He was picked for the Sri Lanka under 19 squad. He represented Sri Lanka under 19 team in 2017 and 2018. He represented the country on many tours - Asia Cup 2017 and 2018 (Malaysia and Bangladesh), India and Youth World Cup (New Zealand) under Roy Dias, Chaminda Vaas and Upul Chandana coaching staff of Sri Lanka youth team in 2018. He scored 448 runs with a century and three half centuries in 18 Youth ODI matches. His best batting performance was 111 runs against Afghanistan in the semi final in Asia Cup 2018 and was adjudged man of the match.

Nuanindu represented the ACBT team in the Red Bull T20 tournament in 2019. He scored more than 350 runs with two centuries against CINEC and IBS and a half century.

Sri Lanka test Cap Vishwa Fernando’s younger brother Nuwanidu made his debut in the Premier Clubs tournament for Panadura SC in the season of 2016/17. He joined Baduraliya CC in 2017/18. He joined Singhalese Sports Club from season of 2019/20. He scored his first century against BRC. He made a century against Galle CC in the last Premier under 23 season. Nuwanidu represented Champion Jaffna Stallions in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) tournament.
