Samadhi Lakshani does her school proud

Samadhi Lakshani Dissanayake, Grade11 student of Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy did her School and her native town, Kandy proud when she won the Heptathalon event as a Schoolgirl competing with Sri Lanka Air Force competitors. The Heptathlon includes seven events and she came first in 100, 200 800 metre races, Long Jump and second in High Jump, Shot Putt and JavelinThrow and collected 3526 points.The competitor from Air Force came second and collected 2000 points and Samadhi was the clear winner.

The achievement of this teenage girl will definitely help her to go very far with proper coaching and her Athletic Coach is Sanjeewa Weerakkody, Assistant.Director of Sports and Physical Education.

Samadhi had her primary education at Dodanwala Model School where she participated in 50, 75 metre races and Long Jump at the start and while doing athletics she started gymnastics under the coaching of Chinthaka Prasad. She continued athletics as well as gymnastics after getting admitted to Swarnamali Balika in 2012 and she qualified in 75 and 100 metres. at the Provincial meet when she achieved the qualified time

.Samadhi won a Silver Medal in gymnastics at the Central Province Gymnastic Contest and in 2013 she won the 75 metres. and 100 metre races and in addition achieved the qualifying distance in Long Jump.Again she secured a Silver Medal at the Central Province and All Island Gymnastics Contest and at the National Festival in the year 2016. She got the third place in the 800 metres. Hurdles at the Zonal Meet in the same year.

She came first in 80 metre Hurdles at the Junior and Senior Meets in the John Tarbet Athletic Meet held at Embilipitiya in 2016.

After that she came second in 80 metre. Hurdles at the gymnastic competition and won a Silver Medal. She gave up gymnastics after this win as she wanted to concentrate on athletics.

In 2017 Samadhi got the first place in 80 metres. Hurdles at the All Island Schools Meet held at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium and she continued her winning spree when she came second in the 100 metres. hurdles at the Provincial Meet held at the Bogambara Grounds.

In 2019 she achieved the third place at the Junior National Meet while practicing for the Pentathlon Meet. Her main aim is to compete at the Olympic Games in future and she is grateful to her athletic and gymnastic coaches for their encouragement and she is hoping to take part in the Junior Asian Championship to be held in 2022.
