Wesley College shattered the unbeaten run of the St. Joseph’s College when they secured a nail-biting 15-13 victory in a thrilling inter-school rugby league ‘Cup’ match at Longdon Place yesterday after trailing 10-5 at the break.
The winners asserted their dominance crossing the line thrice while Joes scored two unconverted tries and a penalty.
St. Joseph’s drew first blood after a sizzling run by centre Tharindu Maduranga who sliced through the defence on the left to dive over in the corner in the 12th minute of the game.
Teran Karunanayake scored St. Joseph’s second try in the 25th minute when he caught the defence flat footed with a chip and chase to win the race to the touchdown. Both conversion attempts by their kicks Santhush Algama struck the uprights.
As half-time beckoned, the Wesley pack made their presence felt when winger Tharusha Jayaweera stormed over the line after being virtually gifted the ball by Maduranga. Mursheed Subair failed to convert.
Wesley got the equalizer in the 40th minute Vishwa Welagadedera scored off an overlap on the right. However, Algama made no mistake with a 50th minute penalty to give Joes the edge 13-10 once again.
But Wesley had the last laugh when Jayaweera scored his second try off a beautiful set piece move in the 66th minute to end the unbeaten run of St. Joseph’s.
