Science upset giant-killers Wesley to sign off on a high

Science College stopped high-riding Wesley College with a stunning 26-21 win in an inter-school rugby league Cup encounter at Air Force grounds Ratmalana yesterday.

Tries from Rashmika Kariyawasam, Thisira Meegoda, Imash Pitiyage, Navindu Silva, three of which were goaled by Kavindu Cooray gave Science the edge over Wesley who scored three tries through Murshid Zubair, Dineth Dinuja, Samuel Ogbobor with Zubair adding the extra points.

Rashmika Kariyawasam opened scoring for the home side Science with a powerful pick-up and drive with Cooray converting.

Wesley equalized after skipper Zubair caught the defence flat-footed with a grubber with Shehab Packeerally exchanging passes Tharusha Jayaweera for Zubair to complete the move and converting his own try.

Science hit back immediately to regain the lead 12-7 by spreading the ball wide for second rower Meegoda stepping past fullback Zubair for an unconverted try shortly before the interval.

Wesley bounced back with phased out attacks soon after the turn around for prop Dinuja to power his way through with Zubair adding the extra points to give them a 14-12 edge. Imash Pitiyage scored a superb try for Science with a kick and chase with Cooray making a spectacular conversion to give them a 19-14 cushion.

Winger Navindu Silva made a scything run to shatter the Wesley defence after some good work from scrum-half Rasanga Weerasinghe and Hasaranaga Akmeemana for an unconverted try which nevertheless gave Science a bonus point.

Wesley kept the game alive as Samuel Ogbobor touched down under the posts with Zubair converting the try but Science hung on grimly for their solitary victory in the second round.
