Lloyd Eric Hope, a powerful ring brawler who was one of the finest boxers to come out of St. Sylvester’s College in mid 1950’s and early 1960’s, died on Saturday. He was 72.
Some of his school mates at boxing were Malcolm Bulner, Derrick Gunasinghe, Bernard Jansz and A.C.R.Herathge. He was coached by Derrick Raymond.
Lloyd Hope joined the Navy soon after leaving school and went on to box for the Navy and Defence Services for many years.
In the mid-1960s Sri Lanka bantam weight boxer, Winston Van Cuylenberg, ruled the roost. He was thought to be unbeatable – that was until the night he faced Hope in the Bambalapitiya Stadium. Hope outpointed Van Cuylenberg in a bleeding bruiser.
During his schooldays, Hope was living at Asgiriya and gave his heart for boxing. He later became a top class coach and coached his old school St. Sylvester’s College. His remains lie at No. 5 Cinnamon Residence, Raja Mawatha, Kotugoda, Ja Ela and the cremation will take palce on Monday at 4 p.m. at Kapuwatte, Kandana.
