
Babulhassan MV from Kegalle and Pallekaluwa MV Kegalle emerged boys and girls title winners of the U12 Milo inter school football championship concluded at Jayathilaka Stadium Nawalapitiya yesterday.
Both boys and girls final matches were drawn after two all in the boys while three all in the girls match after full time.
In the penalty shootout, Babulhassan MV scored 3-2 over Al Ameen College and Pallekaluwa MV scored 2-1 over Bandiwewa MV.
In the boys semifinals, Babulhassan MV beat St.Henry’s College, Ilavalai by 2-0 while Al Ameen MV defeated St Johns College from Jaffna by 2-0.
The boy’s third place was won by St. Henry’s College, beating St Johns by 3-2 while the girls third place was won by Maliyadeva Balika by 1-0 in the penalty shootout after ending nil all in full time.
In the girls semifinals Bandiwewa MV advanced to finals beating Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya by 2-0 while Pallekaluwa MV beat Kadawela MV by 2-0 in the second semifinal.
Over 400 participants from 32 boys’ schools and 32 girls schools participated in the final tournament, followed by a coaching camp where an expert panel of coaches will select the eight most deserving players to represent Sri Lanka in the MILO Champions Cup.
Although it was initially scheduled to be held in China, the venue has now been shifted to Barcelona.
The selected eight players will represent Sri Lanka in the MILO Champions Cup in Barcelona competing with countries across the world such as Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Pakistan, Colombia, Chille, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. A playing side in the tournament will comprise eight players, in a series of 5-a-side matches with a minimum of one female player on each team with each match lasting for two halves of 10 minutes. The football event will go for nine days, which will also include a coaching camp run by FC Barcelona – the FC Barcelona Barca Academy (Soccer School).
Throughout the campaign MILO with FC Barcelona will also put heavy focus on recognizing good team values among the young players and to demonstrate the importance of team spirit.
‘The MILO Champions Cup’ kicked-off in Sri Lanka with an all-island U-12 Football Tournament, executed by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Football Association under the patronage of the Ministry of Education.
