Royal ruggerite Dr. Vargunam dies

The first Royal College Bradby winning team hooker Dr. T. “Muggy” Vargunam passed away on Sunday morning in Kandy. He was in Royal’s first win Bradby team of 1948 under the captaincy of Ashey Cader.

Royal with four fresher’s won both legs - 6/3 and 8/6 respectively and had players like A. Goonawardene, Ashey Cader, G.C. Weinmen, A.E. Bartholomeusz, D.A. Van Twest, D.R. Perera, S.D.N. Hapugalle, D.D. Samarasinghe, Trevor Anghie, T. “Muggy” Vargunam, E.D. Fonseka, B.Sivaratnam, D. Raymond, G.T. Perinpanayagam and A.J.B. Anghie. J.C.A. Corea was the principal, Sydney G de Zoysa (Coach), M.T. Thambapillai (Rugby Master).

Vargunam’s remains lie at Nuwara Malsalawa from today (Tuesday) till Wednesday. The cremation will take place at the Mahiyawa General Cemetery on Wednesday.
