The much anticipating annual premier tennis event, the Colombo Championship will be worked off its 102nd edition from May 26 to June 11 at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) playing section courts. This was revealed to the media during a press briefing at the SLTA recently. Being one of the only two annual Super 'A' grade tournaments, Colombo Championship has grown strength to strength in over its 100 years of history and attracts the cream of local tennis players for the tournament.
SLTA will host the event with the principal sponsorship of Vision Care while Perera & Sons joined in as a co-sponsor. Ralhum Trading (Pvt) Ltd, the sole agents for the Dunlop balls is the sponsor for official ball.
This year’s championship will comprise 12 junior age category events, five open events, nine senior age category events and two wheelchair events (singles and doubles) totalling 28 events. Organisers should be commended for accepting free entries to the two wheelchair events.
According to the tournament director Udith Wickramasinghe around 800 entries are expected for this year's tournament. The entry forms should be handed over to SLT playing section office before 5.00pm, May 23 and the seedings are scheduled for May 22, 6.00pm. The draw will take place on May 23, 7.00pm at the SLTA. The matches will commence from 2.30pm on week days and 7.30am on weekends and public holidays during the tournament.
The two-week championship will be an exciting event for a vast range of tennis players from all walks of life as it includes highest number of events spanning across junior, open, senior and wheelchair categories.
A participant is allowed to take part in maximum three junior events including a one compulsory doubles event. All singles events will be determined by best of three tie break sets with advantage while the doubles events rulings can be vary according to the age group.
SLTA also revealed that they have made arrangements to play matches under floodlights too if the need arises due to inclement weather or influx of large number of entries for the events.

SLTA playing section president Ravi Perera thanked all the sponsors for coming forward to support this prestigious championship and said SLTA hopes to strengthen their ties with these generous sponsors in years to come.
